Custom timber and composite decks for Vaucluse homes
PERGOLAS AND PATIOS
Adora Decks builds custom timber and composite decks across Vaucluse, from Hopetoun Avenue to Watsons Bay. We select materials suited to coastal conditions, use 316 stainless steel fixings as standard, and check Woollahra Council heritage requirements before design. Owner-Director Jason provides on-site quotes (licence 451245C). Call 02 4666 3800 or send us photos for a quote.
Deck builders in Vaucluse, what we build
Harbour homes rarely want just a deck. The Vaucluse brief usually covers decking plus landscaping, pergolas, pool surrounds and screening because the whole backyard is on show from inside the house and from the water. The scope we cover:
- Custom timber decks in Blackbutt, Merbau, Treated Pine and Pine
- Composite decks in WoodEvo and Innawood
- Pool decks and pool surrounds around concrete and fibreglass pools
- Pergolas and patios integrated with the deck level
- Privacy screens and decorative fencing
- Retaining walls and landscaping for the sloping-block addresses
- Deck maintenance, re-oiling, and board replacement on existing decks
One licence covers the whole scope. There are no trade handovers between the deck, the pergola and the fencing.
Why Vaucluse decks need a different specification
Three things change the build in Vaucluse: harbour exposure, Woollahra Council heritage controls, and the slope of the block.
Harbour frontage means persistent salt spray in Vaucluse Bay, Parsley Bay and Watsons Bay. Standard bright zinc-plated screws will corrode within a few years on a harbour-facing deck, so we use marine-grade 316 stainless screws or hidden fasteners as the default on every job within 200 metres of open water. Material choice matters here too. Blackbutt holds its oil finish through harbour salt spray better than Merbau. For low-maintenance harbour decks, composite rules out oiling altogether.
Woollahra Council’s heritage conservation areas cover much of Vaucluse, including the land around Vaucluse House and the historic streets near Olola Avenue and Hopetoun Avenue. Decks above 1 metre of natural ground level in those zones generally need a DA, and material and detail choices need to respect the heritage setting. We check the LEP and heritage schedule before quoting so a surprise approval knockback does not derail the build.
Vaucluse blocks often step down steeply towards the harbour. Elevated decks with 1 to 2 metres of fall across the deck run are common, which means engineered subframes and integrated retaining walls. We handle both as one team, which cuts the handover between earthworks and framing.
How quickly we can get to you
Camden to Vaucluse is around 60 to 70 minutes via the M5 and Eastern Distributor. Site visits are usually booked inside three business days. Written quote within 30 minutes of the site visit for most jobs. Larger harbour-side builds with engineering sign-off add about a week to the pre-build phase for drawings and council response.
Recent work and the sort of jobs we take on
Common Vaucluse briefs:
- Harbour-view entertaining decks with built-in bench seating, integrated planters and glass balustrade
- Pool surrounds in composite around concrete pools, with slip-rated grooved boards and glass pool fencing to AS1926.1
- Elevated multi-level decks stepping down a sloping block towards the water
- Replacement decks on existing timber subframes that have deteriorated under harbour exposure
Nearby Eastern Suburbs we also cover
Vaucluse sits inside our broader Eastern Suburbs service area. We also cover Rose Bay, Dover Heights, Watsons Bay, Point Piper, Double Bay, Bellevue Hill and the rest of the Eastern Suburbs. See our Eastern Suburbs page for the full suburb list.
What drives the price
- Material: Composite is around 30 to 40% more up front than Merbau but skips the every-12-to-18-month oiling cycle. For a harbour-side home where maintenance is a long-term cost, composite usually comes out cheaper over 10 years.
- Slope: Elevated decks and integrated retaining walls add structural work versus a dead-level build.
- Heritage overlay: DA requirements through Woollahra Council add four to eight weeks and drawing fees.
- Access: Waterfront jobs sometimes bring materials in from the harbour side rather than the street side, which adds handling cost but avoids damage to established gardens.
- Scope: Pool surrounds, screens and landscaping bundled into a single build save coordination time compared to splitting across trades.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need council approval for a deck in Vaucluse?
Most decks under 1 metre of natural ground level qualify as exempt development under the NSW SEPP, but Woollahra Council’s heritage conservation areas (which cover large parts of Vaucluse) are stricter. Most jobs there need a DA regardless of height. We check the LEP map and heritage schedule before quoting.
What's the best decking material for a Vaucluse harbour home?
For harbour-facing decks, Blackbutt or a top-tier composite (WoodEvo, Innawood) will outlast Merbau. Blackbutt holds oil finish through salt spray better than Merbau. Composite skips the oiling cycle altogether, which is often the better call for a long-term harbour-side home.
Can you work on properties with limited street access?
Yes. For jobs with jetty access or tight laneway street access, we have brought materials in from the harbour side. It adds handling cost but avoids damage to established gardens and shortens handling times for larger timber bundles.
How long does a Vaucluse deck build take?
Standard 25 to 45 m² decks are usually on and off inside two to three weeks. Elevated multi-level decks with engineering sign-off and heritage-area DAs take longer, usually six to ten weeks total including approvals.
