How to Find the Right Team for Your Pool Decks and Pergolas in Sydney?

Elevating your outdoor living in Sydney with decks and pergolas is fun, but can be overwhelming. If you haven’t realised yet, there’s a wide variety of options when it comes to decks and pergolas. These two complement each other so well that when you fail to pair the perfect match, this can quickly change the ambience of your backyard. That’s why it’s important to ensure you are familiar with the different factors that may influence your new backyard and its design.

1. Goal
In any home improvement project, it’s extremely important to know what you want to achieve with the project. Is it to extend your indoor area? To add an outdoor area for occasions? Or to create a coherent space? Whatever it is, you have to identify your ultimate goal.

2. Design and Style
While our team will help you with the design and style, having an idea in mind can help speed up the process. However, our expert highly recommends choosing a design and style that can go along with your existing interior to create a seamless exterior.

3. Extras
High-quality decks and pergolas can already spruce up a backyard. But if you have the means and would really want to take further it to the next level, why not add a pool? Pooled deck and pergola are not just fun but can also increase the market value of your property.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need council approval for a patio in Sydney?

Frequently not. Under the NSW Codes SEPP, a patio attached to the side or rear of a dwelling can be exempt development if it meets the floor-area and height standards for your lot, sits behind the building line of any road frontage, meets boundary setbacks, and isn’t on heritage-listed or otherwise restricted land. The widely cited thresholds are 25m² and a floor level within 1m of ground. We confirm your pathway before design.

If your patio is in a heritage conservation area or draft conservation area, it must sit behind the building line of any road frontage to qualify as exempt development. Land listed on the State Heritage Register or subject to an interim heritage order generally can’t use the exempt pathway at all. These sites need a proper approval strategy from day one, and we’ll tell you that upfront.

If the structure sits within 5 metres of the house on bushfire-prone land, it must be built from non-combustible material. That rules out some timber options and pushes the design toward steel and aluminium framing with compliant roofing. Large parts of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Hills District and bushland fringes are mapped as bushfire-prone, so it’s one of the first things we check.

Yes — metal components used in exempt development must be low-reflective and factory pre-coloured. Raw or mill-finish sheeting doesn’t comply. There are also rules about not building beyond the building line of any road frontage, and boundary setbacks that vary by zone. These aren’t obstacles so much as design constraints, and they’re much cheaper to design around than to rectify.

Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, North Shore, Sutherland Shire, the Hills District and Greater Sydney generally, plus the Southern Highlands. We regularly work in Castle Hill, Blacktown and Wahroonga. Sydney’s variety — coastal salt exposure, reactive clay in the west, sandstone on the North Shore — means the right build differs by suburb, which is exactly why local experience matters.

It varies more than decking because roofing choice, span, footings and whether a base is needed all move the number substantially. Sydney sits above the national average for labour and compliance. Rather than quote a headline rate we’d have to qualify to death, we measure on site, confirm the approval pathway, and give you an itemised written quote with upfront pricing and no surprises.

Autumn and winter are typically the quieter, faster-to-book period, and building then means the space is ready before you actually want it. Building in spring means competing for the same trades as everyone else who left it until the weather turned. We run seasonal offers through the cooler months for exactly that reason — check the current deal on our Deals page.

Yes. Sloping blocks are common across Sydney and they’re solved either by engineered posts and deeper footings, or by retaining to create a level platform, or a combination. We build retaining walls in-house using timber or concrete sleepers with galvanised steel posts, which means the retaining and the patio get designed together rather than by two contractors negotiating a boundary.

Design and build under one roof, so nothing is lost between the drawing and the site. Owner-Director Jason Nessi personally monitors every project. Upfront pricing and constant communication throughout the build. And a broad in-house service list — patios, pergolas, decking, screening, retaining walls, landscaping and pools — so one team resolves the whole outdoor space rather than four contractors coordinating around each other.

Call 02 4666 3800 or email admin@adoradecks.com.au with your suburb and a description of the space. We’ll book a site visit, measure up, talk through roofing, materials and features, confirm the approval pathway, and provide a free written quote with itemised pricing. Finance is available through HandyPay, and we run seasonal offers worth asking about when you call.
